Synthesis and biological evaluation of a new Schiff base ligand 4-chloro-2-(1-((4- fluorophenyl) imino) ethyl)-5-methylphenoland their metal complexes

AbstractA new Schiff base ligand, 4-chloro-2-(1-((4-fluorophenyl)imino)ethyl)-5-methylphenol, was synthesizedand utilized to form various metal complexes. Comprehensive characterization of the ligand and its metalcomplexes was conducted using spectroscopic techniques, including UV, IR, and NMR, along with TLC,melting point determination, and solubility analysis. The ligand was identified as bidentate, and a 2:1ligand-to-metal ion stoichiometry was confirmed. Antimicrobial evaluation of the synthesized metalcomplexes revealed that Cu(II), Zn(II), and Ag(II) displayed significant antibacterial activity againstpathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Bacillus subtilis.Previous studies have also demonstrated the antibacterial potential of various Schiff base metal complexesagainst both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
