Can Machines Grow Up? A Perspective on the Next Question for AI Entities

As artificial intelligence (AI) evolves beyond the imitative phase evaluated by the Turing Test, a new essential question arises for the next decades: 'Can machines grow?'. Through this question we propose a new paradigm shift in how we view the development of AI entities, moving beyond mere simulation of human behavior towards autonomy, responsibility, and artificial wisdom. The goal of this paper is to present an informative synthesis of the relevant literature, highlight the lack of an explicit successor question in the scientific literature, and positions this inquiry as a foundation for interdisciplinary reflection.

Abstract

As artificial intelligence (AI) evolves beyond the imitative phase evaluated by the Turing Test, a new essential question arises for the next decades: 'Can machines grow?'. Through this question we propose a new paradigm shift in how we view the development of AI entities, moving beyond mere simulation of human behavior towards autonomy, responsibility, and artificial wisdom. The goal of this paper is to present an informative synthesis of the relevant literature, highlight the lack of an explicit successor question in the scientific literature, and positions this inquiry as a foundation for interdisciplinary reflection.
