The Psychological and Social Impact of AI-Generated Virtual Companions on Elderly Loneliness
AI-generated virtual companions are increasingly used to mitigate loneliness among elderly populations. This study examines the psychological and social impacts of these companions on senior users. Through a six-month observational study, we measured changes in participants’ mood, perceived loneliness, and social engagement. Findings indicate significant reductions in loneliness and mild improvements in mood and cognitive engagement, although long-term dependency warrants careful consideration. These results highlight the potential of AI technologies to enhance mental well-being and social connectedness among the elderly.
