Preliminary Design and Development of a Gyro-Stabilized Canister Satellite for Atmospheric Data Acquisition and Descent Control
This Research presents the design, development, and preliminary testing of a CANSAT equipped with an innovative mechanical gyro-controlled descent system by Team AGNEE MANTHAN from Kalpana Chawla Centre for Research in Space science and Technology (KCCRSST) , Chandigarh University. The mission statement was given by INSPACe , ISRO and ASTRONAUTICAL SOCIETY OF INDIA aims to develop a compact and efficient CANSAT capable of controlled descent and stable telemetry transmission. The CANSAT is designed for deployment from a Sounding rocket at an altitude of 800–900 meters, utilizing a two-stage parachute system to achieve a controlled descent. The onboard sensors, including GPS, pressure, temperature, and rotation sensors, provide real-time data transmission to a ground station. A key innovation is the implementation of a mechanical gyroscope to enhance stability during descent. The structural design ensures the CANSAT can withstand 15 Gs of launch acceleration and 30 Gs of shock during separation. The design process includes system integration, trade studies for sensor selection, power management, and structural analysis. The study demonstrates the feasibility of mechanical gyroscopic stabilization in small satellite recovery systems and highlights the challenges encountered during development, such as sensor calibration and parachute deployment timing. This research provides insights for future student-led satellite missions and contributes to the advancement of descent control mechanisms in small satellite applications.
