Hormonal Changes and Heart Disease: What Women Need to Know
Originally published online at https://arbonahealthhub.com/2025/02/07/hormonal-changes-and-heart-disease-what-women-need-to-know/ This article examines the rising risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in women following menopause, exploring how declining estrogen levels—and associated changes in lipid profiles, body fat distribution, sleep, and vasomotor symptoms—undermine vascular health. It reviews evidence that estrogen promotes nitric oxide–mediated vasodilation and lowers LDL cholesterol, and notes that postmenopausal women exhibit higher LDL and inflammatory markers that drive plaque formation. Current prevention focuses on lifestyle changes and standard pharmacotherapy, but no therapies specifically target hormonal shifts; hormone replacement therapy (HRT) remains controversial due to mixed evidence and potential risks. The article also highlights gaps in research and diagnosis, including underrecognition of women’s atypical symptoms and the need for tailored strategies to improve early detection, prevention, and treatment of heart disease in menopausal and postmenopausal women.
