Role of Nursing Diplomacy in Addressing Global Health Challenges

Abstract: This master's thesis, submitted by Khalid Ismail Mohamud to Accord University, explores the emergent field of nursing diplomacy and its pivotal role in addressing global health challenges. Nursing diplomacy leverages the unique skills and global perspectives of nurses to improve health outcomes and foster international cooperation. This study highlights how nurses, with their patient-centered approach and deep cultural competence, can act as effective intermediaries in international health settings, advocating for improved health policies and practices across borders. The research outlines the key principles of nursing diplomacy, including collaboration, advocacy, cultural competence, and a commitment to social justice, which empower nurses to engage effectively in global health arenas. By examining case studies and existing initiatives, this thesis provides a detailed look at how nurses can influence global health outcomes through direct care, education, policy advocacy, and participation in international health organizations. The study uses a mixed-methods approach to capture both qualitative insights from nursing professionals engaged in diplomacy and quantitative data on the impacts of such initiatives. It assesses the barriers nurses face, such as limited recognition and support, and proposes strategies to enhance their roles in global health diplomacy.
