Mindfulness Education for Sustainable Development: A Review of Buddhist Pedagogies in Global Education Systems
Abstract Buddhist mindfulness techniques, including Vipassanā (insight meditation) and Samatha (concentration meditation), are being implemented in schools worldwide to enhance holistic student development and solve societal concerns. According to studies, mindfulness programs improve students' emotional control, empathy, and self-awareness while also encouraging active participation in community well-being and environmental care. These programs are founded on major Buddhist concepts such as interdependence, compassion, and ethical responsibility, with the purpose of increasing students' emotional intelligence and moral discernment in preparation for future challenges. Case studies from Cambodia, Thailand, the United States, and India demonstrate the practical application of Buddhist mindfulness in a variety of cultural circumstances. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programs supported by the government in Southeast Asia have resulted in higher academic performance and fewer classroom clashes. Meanwhile, Indian Tibetan Buddhist institutions integrate contemplative practices with sustainability education, fostering ethical leadership and ecological awareness at a young age. To fully realize the benefits of Buddhist mindfulness in education, sustained funding, extensive teacher training, and the creation of culturally appropriate curricula are required. Combining various teaching strategies, empirical data, and theoretical frameworks yields Buddhist mindfulness education as a powerful, all-encompassing method that balances academic success with ethical values and environmental responsibility, resulting in compassionate, forward-thinking global citizens. Keywords: Consist in mindfulness in education, social-emotional learning, Buddhist pedagogy, sustainable development, holistic student development, and worldwide education systems.
