A STUDY ON THE CHALLENGES AND PROSPECTS OF COIR INDUSTRY IN COIMBATORE DISTRICT

The coir industry, deeply rooted in India’s rural economy, plays a pivotal role in employment generation, especially in coconut-producing regions. This research explores the prevailing challenges and future prospects of the coir industry in the Coimbatore district. Data was collected from 100 coir units using structured questionnaires, focusing on operational status, labor conditions, production methods, and market distribution. Findings indicate that while the majority of units remain active and semi-urban based, critical issues such as low wages, limited access to subsidies, lack of mechanization, and underutilization of export potential hinder progress. This study offers key policy suggestions aimed at revitalizing this traditional sector.
