AI Development: Time to Hit the Brakes (Why and Who Should Lead the Oversight Frontline)

This article presents a reflective perspective on the urgency of global oversight in the development of artificial intelligence (AI). It highlights the ethical risks, the phenomenon of hallucination in generative AI, and the potential dangers of unchecked competition among developers. Drawing from first-hand experience in using AI to assist rural food innovation projects, the author calls for the formation of a global AI oversight body—similar to the IAEA. The article proposes six core mandates for such a body and encourages immediate action beyond just discussion or resolutions.
