TRANSLATION OF ENGLISH VERB PHRASES INTO UZBEK: PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS

Abstract. The translation of English verb idioms and phrasal verbs, such as “kick the bucket” (to die), “let the cat out of the bag” (reveal a secret), “cheer up” (become happier), and “look through” (review briefly), presents significant challenges due to their non-literal meanings, cultural specificity, and structural differences. This article examines the complexities of rendering these expressions into Uzbek, where equivalents like “olamdan o‘tmoq” or “sirni fosh qilmoq” often differ in tone and imagery. Drawing on recent linguistic research, the author identifies key obstacles, including semantic mismatches, cultural disparities, and syntactic constraints, which complicate accurate translation. The study proposes practical solutions, such as substitution, paraphrasing, and cultural adaptation, to address these challenges. By offering strategies to balance meaning and cultural nuance, this article contributes to enhancing the effectiveness of translating verb idioms and phrasal verbs, fostering cross-cultural understanding in English-Uzbek translation practices.
