Amadiba Agroforestry Plant Care Manual
A Plant Care Manual designed for the project Developing capacity for Indigenous Community Agroforestry in the Amadiba area of Eastern Mpondoland. Output 2 of January 2025 for the SADC Great Green Wall Initiative funded by the GEF Small Grants Programme implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The project is a collaboration between the Institute of Natural Resources (INR),Sustaining the Wild Coast (SWC), and Siyasisiza Trust (ST) working together with residents of the Amadiba Coastal Villages in Eastern Mpondoland. The Amadiba area in the Eastern Cape, South Africa is a biodiversity hotspot, and one of the few extant indigenous communities that practice traditional farming. The area faces threat from invasive alien encroachment, coastal erosion, land degradation and abandonment, and a drain on biocultural heritage due to youth out-migration. The project is engaging the residents of the six villages constituting the Amadiba area in selecting, planting, propagating, and utilizing locally appropriate indigenous tree species to enhance their livelihoods. The project has planted 2700 plants belonging to 32 species over an area of 125 hectares in the six communities, with the aim of promoting climate resilient agroforestry. The project will build capacity in members of the community including women and youth in agroforestry design, plantpropagation, sustainable use, and enterprise opportunities. This set of manuals documents the procedures used to plant the species, care for them, and monitor their growth over a 6 month period. It also presents general principles for sustainable use of the species, and techniques for their propagation.
