The relevance of the problem under analysis is accounted for by the need to study phraseological units with sacred components both in terms of their functioning in the Russian language and in terms of investigating the phraseological richness of A. Tvardovsky's works. The research objective is functional and semantic analysis of idioms with the elements God, paradise, soul, devil. A number of methods have been applied in the course of the research, among them are heuristic, hermeneutical, componential analysis, as well as description and comparison. The conclusions are drawn about the functions of phraseological units in poetry. Set expressions add up emotional and expressive colouring to the narrative. They are resorted to in order to describe the characters’ mental state in various life situations. Idioms are used as a distinctive feature of the speech of the hero in a lyrical work
