Beyond Joint Pain: The Hidden Link Between RA and Thyroid Dysfunction
RA and thyroid dysfunction are two prevalent autoimmune diseases that often occur together. While RA is mainly characterized by chronic inflammation of the joints, thyroid dysfunction is a broad category of conditions that includes hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and autoimmune thyroid diseases such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease. Currently, evidence is emerging for a strong bidirectional association between RA and thyroid dysfunction, with common genetic, immunological, and environmental factors in their pathogenesis playing the key role. In this review, the complex relationship of RA with thyroid dysfunction regarding the underlying mechanisms, clinical implications, and potential treatments is discussed. This submerged relationship thus guides the improvement in the quality of life of patients with co-existing RA and thyroid disorders.
