Steele, Robert (1788-1840)
This is a biography of Robert Steele, a British Royal Marine who distinguished himself in the Peninsular War after joining the Spanish Army in 1812. Drawn by the promise of advancement, Steele played a notable role in major battles, rising to the rank of teniente coronel and receiving both British and Spanish honours. His post-war life reflected deep commitment to liberal causes in Spain, including diplomatic efforts and support for the Spanish Liberals during the First Carlist War. However, his political activism led to personal financial and legal troubles. Despite these setbacks, Steele remained a respected figure until his death.
