Evaluation of Sanitation Facilities in Primary Schools: Insights from Rajshahi City Corporation, Bangladesh

Sanitary facilities availability is essential for a sustainable and healthy environment. While school sanitation studies all over the world has been widely studied, there is limited research in Bangladesh specifically assessing sanitation facilities in primary schools, creating a gap this study aims to address through. This study evaluates the sanitation facilities in 52 primary schools within Rajshahi City Corporation, Bangladesh. Results reveal that 58% of schools provide separate toilets for boys and girls, and 64% have dedicated toilets for teachers and students, though only three schools offer separate toilets for male and female teachers. Waste disposal baskets are available in 48% of toilets, while 72% of water sources have functional drainage systems. However, teachers reported dissatisfaction with inadequate hand-washing facilities and inconsistent cleaning management, with hygiene standards rated as average in 52% of schools. The study highlights the need for improved water supply, maintenance, and sanitation management. These findings provide actionable insights for policymakers to promote better sanitation in primary schools, contributing to environmental sustainability and student well-being.
