Sudarshan Kriya Yoga: Breathing Technique for Holistic Health
Abstract: India, a land deeply rooted in spirituality, has given rise to numerous traditions and practices that have influenced millions worldwide. In Sanskrit “swastha” or health means being stabilised in the self. Life energy, the consciousness has enormous potentialities power and intelligence. Total health is where the body, mind, breath, organs, senses and consciousness are in a state of harmony. The consistent practice of Yoga and Pranayama activates and harmonizes the body's natural rhythms, including those of the brain, heartbeat, enzymes, as well as mental and emotional states. Holistic health is a lifestyle approach that takes into account the well-being of the whole person—physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual. It is founded on the belief that the body has an innate ability to heal itself when given the right support. Holistic healthcare emphasizes the interconnectedness and balance of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Sudarshan Kriya Yoga, (SKY) a breathing technique, rooted in the ancient Patanjali Yog Sutras, is a key practice in India's yogic tradition. It is currently undergoing extensive research to establish its effectiveness as an evidence-based treatment. Recognized as one of the most powerful breathing techniques, SKY enhances physical functions, strengthens the mind-body connection, and supports various clinical conditions. Holistic health incorporates scientifically validated complementary therapies, while holistic nursing considers physical, psychological, social, environmental, cultural, and spiritual factors in patient care. In the realm of yoga, Sudarshan Kriya Yoga is practiced to cleanse and purify the body. Over 100 independent studies have been conducted on four continents. These studies were published in peer-reviewed journals. They show a wide range of benefits from practicing SKY. This present paper attempts to show how the yogic breathing practice i.e. SKY leads an individual to the state of the calm and stress-free life.
