Enhancing Centrifugal Pump Performance with Computational Fluid Dynamics

Abstract− The primary objective of this project is to identify a solution to a customer complaint related to the performance of a centrifugal pump. These pumps are commonly employed in systems where a moderate head and discharge are required to transport water through pipelines. However, the current model under review is not delivering the expected efficiency and head values as per its design specifications. To address this issue, the study focuses on evaluating the existing pump’s performance and modifying the impeller’s parametric features to meet the desired operational requirements. Initially, an in-depth study of pump performance theory is conducted to establish a strong foundational understanding. Following this, a 3D model of the impeller is designed using Catia V5 CAD software. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis is then performed on this model to simulate and predict pump performance. Theoretical calculations are used to validate the simulation results. To further refine the design, multiple impeller variants are created by altering key performance-related parameters. Each of these designs undergoes CFD analysis to assess potential improvements. Finally, experimental testing is conducted to validate the performance results obtained through simulation and theoretical approaches, ensuring the redesigned impeller meets the desired specifications.
