Twelve-tone Scala: Theoretical Approaches to 12-Tone Structures
This academic article presents theoretical approaches to the twelve-tone system outside the traditional serialist framework. It explores how 12 chromatic tones can be realized through scale structures in two-scale, three-group, and four-group formations derived from major scales, ascending melodic minor scales, octatonic, and augmented scales. Rather than employing tone rows, it emphasizes conceptual sound images and tonal centers arising from structural relationships. This results in a form of neo-tonality that balances theoretical rigor with expressive freedom, offering a new lens through which composers can craft chromaticism while retaining tonal coherence and imaginative space. This 12-tone music approach does not adhere to serialist techniques or strict tone rows. Instead, it presents a neo-tonal framework that emphasizes tonal centers formed through interrelations among scale structures across the different groups described above. The integration of the two-scale, three-group, and four-group theories allows composers to create full chromaticism using all 12 tones either overtly or as tonal implications while still preserving a sense of center, direction, and emotional expression.
