A Trauma Theory Analysis of Trauma and Resilience in Mahasweta Devi's Stanadayini
This article examines the themes of trauma, exploitation, and resistance in Mahasweta Devi"s Stanadayini (The Breast-Giver) through the lens of trauma theory. Jashoda, a lower-caste wet nurse, symbolizes the commodification of the female body and the systemic oppression of marginalized groups. Her experiences highlight structural trauma rooted in caste, class, and gender inequalities. While her silence reflects internalized oppression, her physical decline and psychological isolation underscore the exploitation she endures. Despite these challenges, Jashoda"s resilience and agency emerge as significant themes. The narrative critiques sociopolitical structures that perpetuate exploitation and celebrates the tenacity of the human spirit, offering universal insights into survival and dignity in the face of systemic trauma.
