Effect of zinc on diabetic patients – A Review

ABSTRACT: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycaemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action or both. In the quest for effective management strategies, the role of micronutrients such as zinc has garnered considerable attention due to its potential impact on glucose metabolism and insulin function in diabetic individuals. Zinc plays a crucial role in various physiological processes, including insulin synthesis, storage, and secretion. It is suggested that zinc deficiency can contribute to the pathogenesis of diabetes and its complications. Conversely, supplementation with zinc has been proposed as a potential therapeutic approach to improve glycaemic control and ameliorate diabetic complications by influencing the insulin sensitivity, beta-cell function, oxidative stress, inflammation, and vascular health in diabetic individuals. Keywords: Diabetes Mellitus, Zinc, Insulin sensitivity, Glycaemic control
