The subspecies Carduelis carduelis present in the region of Calabria
The goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis - Linnaeus, 1758), is an iconic passerine bird of the family Fringillidae, which is found in the wild in a rather wide habitat. The geographical distribution of its areas of settlement includes Europe, Russia (including the Siberian part), North Africa and parts of Asia. In Italy the goldfinch is widespread throughout the country. With regard to the area that includes the region of Calabria, both the specialised literature and the scientific circuit report the resident presence exclusively of the subspecies Tschusii (Arrigoni Degli Oddi, 1902). Indeed, some specialised sources also report sporadic presences of the Balkan subspecies during the autumn migration period (Sachtleben, 1919). In Calabria, however, there is in fact a strong presence of the subspecies Parva (Tschusi, 1901), which has never been reported and is never mentioned in any text. The aim of this study is to fill this gap and lay the foundations for further studies on the subject.
