The novel is a river which passes from Bankim Chandra Chatterjee to Salman Rushdie, Vikram Seth and Amitav Ghosh via trio—Mulk Raj Anand, R.K. Narayan and Raja Rao. Its feminine water flows from Kamala Markandaya to the new women novelists like Arundhati Roy, Kiran Desai and Manju Kapoor. The future of Indian Novel in English is bright and its river will continue to nourish many contemporary novelists like Adiga, Chetan Bhagat and many more novelists.
