The impact of industrial development on agriculture in Chandrapur District-Maharashtra
Abstract This study investigates how industrial development, particularly coal mining and power generation, affects agriculture in Chandrapur District, Maharashtra. Industrialization has introduced both opportunities and challenges for the region’s farmers. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from 200 farmer surveys and qualitative insights from interviews with local stakeholders. The findings reveal a complex relationship between industrial growth and agriculture. On one hand, some farmers benefit from improved infrastructure, such as better transportation and market access, resulting from industrial activities. On the other hand, many farmers face adverse effects, including reduced availability of arable land, water scarcity, and changes in labor patterns. These challenges lead to shifts in crop choices and a decline in agricultural productivity for some. The study highlights the competing demands between industrial and agricultural development, emphasizing the importance of integrated policies to support sustainable agriculture while fostering industrial growth. Effective collaboration among key stakeholders-farmers, industries, and policymakers-is crucial to balancing these demands and ensuring equitable regional development. By addressing the negative impacts and leveraging the opportunities associated with industrialization, the study aims to guide policymakers and communities in mitigating conflicts and promoting coexistence between these sectors. It provides actionable insights to help shape policies that prioritize both agricultural sustainability and industrial progress.
