Introducing the 'Beholding Grid': A framework for exploring the "mystical" realm.

In this paper we present the ‘Beholding Grid’, a framework for identifying the key aspects of the realm that spans personal and society perspectives (I v. WE), as well as conscious and subconscious activities. The Beholding Grid allows for examination of a multiplicity of worldviews, as well as clearly positioning Jung’s concept of Archetypal Symbols, helping to characterise what Wittenstein called “the mystical”. We summarize how the mystical has been investigated through the concept of ‘transcendence’, concerning widespread spiritual experience and the practice of ‘beholding’, which have led to a multiplicity of worldviews. We illustrate how the ambiguity of symbols underpins rituals, ‘bridges’ between societal constraints and individual interpretations, and informs the stories that underpin our ethics.
