Ecological Conflicts in Amitav Ghosh's The Hungry Tide and Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea
Abstract Today, people are increasingly aware of ecological and environmental concerns. The paper explores the connection between human beings and the environment in Amitav Ghosh’s The Hungry Tide and Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea, and examines the impact of ecological conflicts by comparing both novels. Though the issues are of different countries, ecological concerns are the same everywhere. New-age boons- technology and globalisation inadvertently led to migration and travel, carrying the baggage of conflict and misunderstanding between people and the environment. The paper will also focus on whether these writers treat the relationship between humanity and the environment in a similar manner. The researcher seeks to find a solution to the conflicts. Ecopsychology, which focuses on the man-nature relationship, may help to create more awareness of conserving the environment. Preserving the ecological balance may lead to more harmony between man and the environment.
