Peltogyne gracilipes Ducke, Trop. Woods

12. Peltogyne gracilipes Ducke, Trop. Woods 54: 6. 1938. Holotype:— BRAZIL. Roraima: Serra Grande, 1 January 1937, A. Ducke RB35151 (Holotype: RB!; Isotypes: F, IAN!, K, MO, NY, P, U, US). Fig 17. Tree, 20–38 m tall, bark smooth, grayish, branches rough and lenticellate, grayish, stipules early deciduous. Leaflets elliptic, falcate, 5–7.5 × 2.5–3 cm, base oblique, apex acute, glabrous, wax absent on both surfaces, discolorous, petiole 8–12 cm long, petiolule 1–2 mm long, blade decurrent, pulvinus dilated, primary vein conspicuous abaxially, secondary veins conspicuous on both sides, glands present. Inflorescence a panicle, terminal, laxiflorous, rachis velutinous, 10– 15 cm long, inserted in a non-aphyllous branch. Pedicel 1–3 mm long, bracteoles caducous, hypanthium absent. Bud 3 × 3 mm, sepals orbicular to deltoid, outer side pubescent, inner side glabrous, glands present on the adaxial side, petals elliptic, sessile, glabrous, glands present. Stamens of different sizes, antesepalous filaments 2–3 mm long, antepetalous filaments 1–2 mm long. Stipe pilose on the abaxial side, 1 mm long. Ovary semicircular, glabrous, margin with sparse trichomes, 1–3 mm long, style with subterminal insertion, 2.5–4 mm long. Fruit a legume, dehiscent, subtriangular, without a protuberance, margin straight, compressed, 2.8 × 1.5 cm, stipitate, nectary disc not persistent, glabrous, glands present, veins present, not winged. Phenology —Collected in flower in June and July and in fruit between February and May. Distribution and habitat— Peltogyne gracilipes is an Amazonian species endemic to the island of Maracá, in Roraima, where it is found in monodominant formations (Lewis & Owen 1989) (Fig 5). Taxonomic comments— Peltogyne gracilipes is a large tree (20–38 m) with elliptic, falcate leaflets and flowers with a slender, delicate pedicel and is restricted to the Amazon. Ducke (1949) described it as similar to P. pauciflora, since both of them have relatively small leaflets with an oblique base, but P. pauciflora is a tree of a smaller size (3–12 m) and has oblong and not falcate leaflets. Etymology—gracilis, graceful or slender; pes= feet. The name alludes to the shape of the pedicel. Specimens examined — BRAZIL. Roraima: (Boa Vista) Rio Branco, Serra Grande, 01 July 1937, A.
