Reflective Pathways: Using Language-Learning Diaries to Drive English Proficiency

This case study investigates how systematic use of language-learning diaries can catalyse English-language development among undergraduate EFL learners. Over a 12-week classroom intervention, 40 students completed structured weekly diary entries that guided them to self-assess, identify problems, document strategies and set future goals. Descriptive analysis of 480 diary entries revealed a steady decline in anxiety and task-related confusion, alongside marked growth in participation, self-confidence and metacognitive strategy use. By Week 12, learners reported greater success in meeting personal language goals and demonstrated more sophisticated plans for continued improvement and outcomes reflected in their diary reflections rather than in traditional teacher-led assessments. The findings highlight language-learning diaries as a low-cost, high-impact tool: they make learners’ internal processes visible, foster reflective practice and empower students to take purposeful, data-informed steps toward English proficiency. Implications include integrating diary work into EFL curricula and using diary insights to tailor feedback and scaffold learner reflection
