Measuring the Effectiveness of Bingham University's Community Relations through the Lens of Kodape Residents, Karu, Nasarawa State, Nigeria

Background: Universities and their host communities often share a symbiotic relationship, where mutual understanding and cooperation are essential for sustainable development. However, conflicts and misunderstandings frequently arise due to issues such as land disputes, infrastructural pressures, and socio-economic disparities. In Nigeria, tensions between academic institutions and their surrounding communities have sometimes led to strained relationships, protests, and disruptions. Bingham University, located in Kodape, faces the challenge of fostering a harmonious relationship with its host community while advancing its academic and developmental goals. As the university expands, interactions with the Kodape community become more complex, necessitating well-structured community relations strategies to mitigate conflicts, enhance collaboration, and promote goodwill. The effectiveness of these strategies, however, remains a critical concern. Objective: The main objective was to assess the extent of these strategies' utilisation, identify specific approaches, and evaluate their effectiveness, guided by Stakeholder Theory and Excellence Theory as the theoretical framework. Method: A qualitative research design was utilised, involving semi-structured interviews with 6 residents of the University and 20 Kodape community members, making 26 respondents. selected through purposive sampling to capture diverse perspectives. The interview guide was validated by the research supervisor from the Department of Mass Communication, Bingham University, Karu, to ensure clarity, relevance, and alignment with the study’s objectives. A pilot test with five respondents from both Bingham University and the Kodape community was conducted to assess reliability, leading to necessary adjustments for coherence. Additionally, inter-coder reliability was ensured through multiple researchers analyzing the data for consistent interpretation of themes. Result: The findings reveal that while the university has implemented various community engagement initiatives, such as outreach programmes and infrastructure development, perceptions of effectiveness vary significantly among community members. Many residents view the university’s efforts as insufficient, citing a lack of consistent engagement and communication as critical barriers. Conclusion: The study concludes that enhancing community relations requires Bingham University to adopt more symmetrical communication models, engage community members in decision-making, and implement targeted strategies to address unmet needs. Unique contribution: Strengthening these areas will not only improve the university’s relationship with the Kodape community but also foster a more sustainable and beneficial partnership for both parties. Key recommendations: The study recommended the establishment of regular communication channels, involving community representatives in decision-making processes, and prioritising targeted development projects based on community input. Strengthening these areas will not only improve the university’s relationship with the Kodape community but also foster a more sustainable and beneficial partnership for both parties.
