Habitat Utilization, Seasonal Variation and Anthropogenic Impact on Pied Bush Chat (Saxicola Caprata) in Kolhapur District, Maharashtra
The Pied Bush Chat (Saxicola caprata) is a small passerine bird commonly found in agro-rural ecosystems. This study investigates its population distribution, habitat preferences, and the influence of environmental and human induced factors in Kolhapur District, Maharashtra, India. Surveys were conducted from March 2024 to February 2025 using point count and line transect methods across agricultural area, scrublands area, village outskirts area, and forest area. Findings indicate the highest densities in agricultural and rural areas, where food availability is high, and predation risk is lower. In contrast, forest area exhibited reduced populations due to increased predator presence. Seasonal variations showed peak abundance in winter and a decline during monsoon, highlighting the role of climate in population dynamics. Additionally, intensive pesticide used and habitat modifications negatively impacted bird populations. The study emphasizes the importance of sustainable agricultural practices to support avian diversity in human-altered environments.
