CPEC as a Catalyst for Cultural and Socioeconomic Transitions.

China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is one of China's marquee projects under the Belt and RoadInitiative (BRI) to boost regional connectivity and economic integration. While much has been said about its economicand infrastructure implications, this study analyzes cultural and socioeconomic change brought about by CPEC inPakistan. Adopting a mixed-methods research approach, the study integrates qualitative findings with quantitative datato investigate the extent to which CPEC is reshaping local communities, cultural practices, and economic opportunities.Data were collected from three Punjab districts of Sahiwal, Multan, and Bahawalpur, where CPEC projects areoperational or under construction. A multiphase sampling design was used involving 480 respondents surveyed and sixfocus group discussions to capture a spectrum of views. The findings corroborate that CPEC has significantly influenced cultural dynamics by facilitating cross-culturalinteraction and, at the same time, triggering fears of cultural degradation in rural and deprived areas.Socioeconomically, CPEC has created jobs and improved the level of incomes; however, these are inequitablydistributed, bunching in urban centers and high-income groups disproportionately. Furthermore, the analysis uncoversgender-specific impacts of CPEC as women increasingly become active in economic pursuits and face traditional gendernorms. Therefore, the study comes to the conclusion that CPEC has enormous potential for both cultural and economicexchange. It suggests fostering inclusive development, strengthening cultural preservation initiatives, addressingenvironmental issues, increasing transparency and citizen participation, empowering women and marginalized groups, and creating strong monitoring and evaluation systems in order to fulfill its potential. Pakistan should leverage thetransformative potential of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to promote sustainable development andequitable socio-cultural advancement by adopting these measures.
