The Role of Legal Aid in Ensuring Access to Justice for Gender-Based Violence Survivors
Numerous international laws, public awareness initiatives, and legal intervention programs have been established in response to the United Nations' acknowledgment of gender-based violence against women as a significant global health and development issue. This article examines emerging conceptual frameworks, methodological challenges, and selected research findings that aim to support these efforts. Recent studies have identified connections between sexuality, gender, power dynamics, and intimate violence across various countries, and this article provides a review of such research. Additionally, it highlights cultural factors—such as media portrayals of sex and violence—that may increase women's vulnerability to abuse. The article discusses several detrimental outcomes of victimization, including unwanted pregnancies and abortions, which affect behavioral, emotional, and physical health. There is an urgent need for further research to address existing gaps in our understanding of gender-based violence, its dynamics, and its effects, particularly regarding the influence of media, as well as to clarify why different types of violence yield varying consequences in diverse cultural contexts.
