Public perception and acceptance of CCUS. An instrumental qualitative case study in Greece
The role of technological advancements to address environmental issues is an important topic, but there is often a lack of understanding of the nature of those technologies. This study is part of a European Union-funded project, exploring perceptions and experiences with Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage technologies (CCUS). Based on five semi-structured interviews, this multiple case study explores the beliefs and understanding of five people concerning the implementation of CCUS and the installation of a demonstration facility in a nearby location to them. The interview protocol was partly based on a video developed by the project to inform the public about CCUS technologies. We followed an instrumental approach to the data collection as the findings of this study will be used to inform policy writing within a European Union context. Preliminary findings indicate that 1) there is low awareness of CCUS technologies, 2) based on past experiences there is scepticism on the adoption of new technologies and the organizations involved, and 3) more information is needed for the public to form an opinion on these technologies.
