Radloff – the founder of Russian Turkology

The presentation is about the life and works of the German born scholar Friedrich Wilhelm Radloff (1837-1918). His life can be divided into two periods: his life in Germany and his life in Russia. I will talk about aspects of Radloff's collection of the Kyrgyz epic Manas and its translation into the German language by giving several examples from both original Kyrgyz text and its German translation as well as in some cases its English translation by Arthur Thomas Hatto for comparative purposes.
