Achieving low-carbon development strategies using CLEWs model in I.R.IRAN
The energy sector in Iran is responsible for about 81% of total GHGs emission. In recent years, the government has taken initial steps towards mitigation of GHG emissions, such as capacity expansion of renewable power plants, and rationalizing energy subsidies. In this project, different scenarios were conducted to assess different mitigation policies. The policy recommendations: - Omitting the fossil fuel subsidies will lead to an energy supply mix with more renewables resources and therefore will lead to lower carbon emission. This policy is more effective than direct emission limitation in short term. - Reducing the solar system capital cost, even by a third, will not have a significant effect as long as the fossil fuel prices are subsidized.- In conclusion, the best first step towards an energy system with lower emission is gradually omitting fossil fuel subsidies. - Considering the semi-arid climate of Iran, the country suffers from water issues and climate change will likely intensify the problem. So, focusing more on water policies is recommended for the future works.
