Promoting Unity: The Constitutional Significance of Multiethnicity In North Macedonia
Abstract This paper critically examines the constitutional significance of multiethnicity in North Macedonia, focusing on its role in mitigating ethnic tensions and promoting national unity. Despite constitutional provisions and the landmark Ohrid Framework Agreement of 2001 aimed at safeguarding community rights and cultural autonomy, challenges persist in the effective implementation and impact of multicultural policies. The paper explores how these policies have navigated issues such as linguistic rights, educational equality, and political representation for ethnic minorities. It critiques the gap between constitutional ideals and practical outcomes, highlighting instances where multiculturalism has faced resistance or failed to fully address deep-rooted ethnic divisions. By analyzing these complexities, the study aims to offer insights into the broader implications of multiculturalism on social cohesion, political stability, and democratic governance in North Macedonia.
