Biodiversity Assessment in Prek Angkorl, Kampong Trach district, Kampot province, Cambodia

There is limited research on biodiversity resources in Cambodia, particularly within peatland ecosystems. This study investigates the biodiversity of the small riverine peatland area in Svay Tong Khang Cherng Commune, Kampong Trach District, Kampot Province. The objectives were: (1) to identify and document the types of biodiversity resources present in the peatland area, and (2) to assess threats to these resources. Field research was conducted in the mangrove forest near the river mouth, using five randomly selected corner plots (5 m × 5 m, 25 m² each). Forest conditions, plot locations, plant species composition, forest density, and bird species presence were assessed through field surveys. Additionally, group discussions with local residents, village leaders, and rangers provided supplementary information. A total of 39 major plant species were recorded, including 16 tree species. Notable deciduous mangrove species included Lumnitzera littorea, Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora apiculata, and Lumnitzera racemosa. Bird diversity was assessed using five randomly selected transect lines, with 29 bird species observed. Commonly encountered bird species included Muscicapa dauurica, Streptopelia chinensis, Ixobrychus cinnamomeus, and Ixobrychus sinensis. The findings highlight the rich biodiversity of the Svay Tong Khang Cherng peatland and emphasize the urgent need for ongoing conservation efforts.
