Analysis of the application of immersive technologies and gamification to computer science education

Virtual reality and augmented reality technology have the potential to revolutionise education by providing immersive, interactive learning experiences that engage students in a way that traditional methods cannot. Several studies show the benefits of bringing immersive technology into the classroom and there is even more research that shows gamification of a subject has additional benefits to the traditional and standard teaching method; improved student engagement, quicker learning attainment, higher achievement in learning outcomes and gains in knowledge retention are some positive results found throughout these research papers. However, implementing VR in education requires careful planning and consideration of several factors. While it is possible to learn programming through the use of VR games, there are few VR games and educational programs that are specifically designed to teach programming concepts and skills. Using immersive technology and gamification in education is gaining popularity due to the hardware becoming easier to use and more affordable and have also observed improvements in software applications with serious game elements or an educational aspect. Computer science is a rapidly growing field that is expected to continue expanding in the coming years. According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labour Statistics, employment in computer and information technology occupations is projected to grow 11% from 2019 to 2029, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. Yet, there has been limited investigation into the implementation of this new learning paradigm within the computer science field. Through a holistic approach consisting of the development and analysis of virtual reality applications, the construction of a database of educational VR applications, comprehensive literature reviews, and active involvement in academic communities, this Ph.D. research has sought to extensively investigate the potential of immersive technologies and gamification in computer science education. The research has found that the use of interactive, immersive environments engages learners and makes the learning process more enjoyable and interactive which improves knowledge to increase the impact on education retention and improves learning outcomes. For example, some VR games and educational programs can use puzzles, challenges, and other game-like elements to teach programming concepts, such as looping, branching, and data structures. Other programs can use more traditional teaching methods, such as video lectures and interactive exercises. A VR game to teach the fundamental of programming was built for this study and found that while learning programming skills through VR games may not be the same as learning through more traditional methods, such as textbooks or online courses, VR games can be a fun and engaging way to learn programming concepts and skills. However, it is important to keep in mind that VR games are just one tool among many that can be used to learn to program, and they may not be suitable for all learners or in all learning frameworks. To increase the impact on education in the field, further research and development, practical suggestions and guidelines have been summarised and shared.
