Electromagnetic Launch Boost via 130 m Vertical Rail: Conceptual Framework and Economic Evaluation
This conceptual study explores the use of a 130 m vertical electromagnetic rail tower to provide a 113 m/s launch boost to orbital rockets like Falcon 9 and Starship. By delivering kinetic energy prior to engine ignition, the system reduces required propellant by 20 to 165 tonnes depending on vehicle class. Assuming partial reallocation of saved fuel mass to payload (up to 50 %), the economic return significantly improves. The paper evaluates technical feasibility, energy demands, structural implications, and amortization scenarios from $100M to $800M. All values are order-of-magnitude and illustrative; this is not an engineering proposal but a strategic framework for launch system optimization.
