Turning Words into Visual Mastery: Blessy's Adaptation of Goat Days into Aadujeevitham
This article explores the significant contributions of adapting Benyamin’s acclaimed novel Goat Days into a compelling film Aadujeevitham by Blessy. The novel is based on a harrowing story of Najeeb, an Indian migrant worker stuck in dehumanizing servitude in a Middle Eastern desert. The novel is rich in internal monologue and deep emotional reflection of the diaspora. Translating these introspective elements into the visual and auditory realm of cinema presents distinct challenges.Blessy’s interpretation achieves the heart of the novel through visual focus shifting in conservation of Najeeb’s internal conflict and spirit throughout the narrative by employing desert as a strong motif of boredom and hopelessness. The director conveys through photography, sound effects, and physical changes of Prithviraj Sukumaran the emotions and physical damage inflicted upon Najeeb. Most importantly, this article analyzes the relationship between the novel and the film adaptation of Goat Days and its relation to the issues of adaptation in general and strategy of the film adaptation in particular through critical assessment of directorial decisions of Blessy.
