Aprendizaje para Todos: Creating Welcoming Programs for Hispanic Families
This presentation examines the Fort Worth Public Library’s culturally responsive approach to serving Hispanic communities, guided by the principles of Intention,Kindness, and Service and aligned with the People First philosophy. In response to the city’s growing bilingual population, the library delivers programs that integrate language learning with cultural affirmation, including conversation classes, bilingual storytime, citizenship preparation, intergenerational engagement, and literacy initiatives. The session presents program outcomes demonstrating gains in language proficiency, confidence, civic participation, and community connection, along with an overview of program practices, implementation strategies, and key factors for success. Participant narratives provide qualitative insight into the transformative effects of embedding equity, accessibility, and cultural respect within library services. While challenges persist in capacity, geographic access, and varied learner readiness, adaptive delivery models and strong community partnerships have ensured that these programs remain relevant, resilient, and responsive to the needs of the populations they serve.
