Impact of Bi2O3 on radiation shielding properties of MgO-Bi2O3-B2O3-CuO glasses
Abstract:Borate glasses containing bismuth oxide have garnered a lot of attention due to their versatileproperties and possible uses in a wide range of technical domains. This work investigates thephysical and radiation shielding characteristics of MgO–Bi2O3–B2O3–CuO glasses. The glasseswere prepared using the melt-quench technique and Physical properties: density, oxygen molarvolume, and oxygen packing density were calculated. Radiation shielding parameters like massattenuation coefficients (MAC), linear attenuation coefficients (LAC), half-value layers (HVL),mean free path (MFP) and effective atomic numbers (Zeff) was done experimentally using NaI(Tl) scintillation detector and verified from the XCOM code for the energies 0.356, 0.662, 1.173and 1.333 MeV. Moreover attributing to the properties, the created glasses have useful in avariety of domains. This study represents a significant step in developing more efficient andsafer materials for gamma radiation shielding applications.
