Evolution of Modern Diasporas and Diaspora Governance at State Level: Indian Experiences

Human history is full of the stories of migration. There have been various waves of such migration and settlementwith different pull and push factors. However, evolution of Modern Diasporas is closely linked with the movementof people in the colonial period. Ever growing advancements in transportation and communication technologiesare giving further boost to international migration. It has resulted in the advent of Diaspora Governance at global,regional and state level. About two-third state of contemporary global system have evolved some kind of mechanismfor Diaspora Governance. India holds distinction of having world’s second largest Diaspora population, but it wasinitially reluctant to engage herself in their matters. However, India quickly recognized their importance andinfrastructure of Diaspora Governance gradually developed. While Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee introducedactive phase of Diaspora Governance in India, it has reached at the doorstep of our overseas population under theleadership of current Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
