A Scientific Look at the Developments and Achievements in Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is considered one of the most complex and challenging disorders in the field of mental health. Although it is often misunderstood by the public, schizophrenia is not just a case of “being high.” It is a chronic and often serious condition that affects an individual’s thought processes, emotional responses, and behaviors. Although the origins of schizophrenia are not fully understood, it is thought that a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors play a role. When an individual struggles with schizophrenia, they often experience reality that is detached from its context. The main symptoms of schizophrenia can be divided into two groups: positive and negative symptoms. Among the positive symptoms we will discuss here, hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking are expected to be the main ones. Such symptoms make it difficult for a person to perceive reality by affecting their connection to the world around them. Schizophrenia usually begins in young adulthood and tends to be slightly more common in men. Symptoms vary from person to person. Individuals living with this disease may experience feelings of desensitization to the outside world, hearing inner voices, or seeing invisible beings. At this point, hallucinations come to the forefront as one of the most obvious positive symptoms of schizophrenia.
