Koothu is still a vibrant local art tradition in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka. It is an art that evolves along with the lives of the people. We can see that Koothu was performed even during times of various disasters and hardships. Because Koothu is not just a performance but also has the power to create various social cohesion environments during and after the performance. In this Koothu tradition, in 2002, a participatory research project by Professor C. Jayashankar was carried out called Koothu Regeneration. This is an activity to revive traditional Suthu in the places where it is practiced in a way that suits the changing times, with the interpretation of the artists who perform it. S. Sivanayagam was the one who played a leading and complete role in the Koothu revival process, working until the end and also establishing himself in the children's Kootharang. This article examines the characteristics of S. Sivanayagam's role as the main figure in this important Koothu revival.
