Göttingen Postdoc Network Event: Dialogue about how to avoid predators and understanding the changing landscape of research assessment - 10 Sept 2024
Event organized in collaboration with the Göttingen Campus Postdoc Network "Dialogue about how to avoid predators and understanding the changing landscape of research assessment", 10 September 2024, online. Researchers increasingly face challenges when it comes to selecting high-quality journals. This issue is particularly important for early career researchers because individual reputations, funding and career paths can be jeopardized by publishing in predatory or sub-optimal journals. This online event in English consisted of an introduction by Professor Bernhard Brümmer, Göttingen University’s Vice President for Research and Sustainability, followed by a presentation by Dr Birgit Schmidt, Göttingen State and University Library (SUB). There was an open discussion about how best to select publications to promote your career, as well as the currently much-debated topic of research assessment reform, which aims to move away from a “publish or perish” culture. Participants who wished to prepare for the event were encouraged to read the Agreement on Reforming Research Assessment. The following presentations were held: Journal quality: The good, the bad and the in-between - Birgit Schmidt, University of Göttingen Introduction: The Research Assessment Reform - Bernhard Brümmer, University of Göttingen The event built on the event "Georgia-Augusta-Dialog: Quality before quantity - publication strategies, "publish or perish" and the current reform of research evaluation" which took place on 27 June 2024. The follow-up event was organised with postdocs and PhD researchers across the Göttingen Campus in mind. Further activities in support of the on-going reform of research assessment are under development.
