Exploring Misinformation in the Context of Online Page Cloning: An Analysis of Long-term Societal Impact and Counter-strategies in Nigeria
The rise of fake news and cloned pages has introduced significant challenges to Nigeria’s media landscape, affecting public trust, the integrity of information, and societal cohesion. This study provides a critical analysis of the consequences, solutions, and theoretical perspectives surrounding these issues. Drawing from an extensive review of contemporary literature and data from prominent institutions, including the Centre for Democracy and Development and the International Centre for Investigative Reporting, the study underscores the broad reach and influence of fake news and cloned pages. Findings indicate that a substantial segment of the Nigerian population encounters and often responds to misleading information, compromising media credibility and public trust. The study advocates for strategic interventions, such as improved media literacy, robust fact-checking frameworks, and collaborative regulatory efforts, to address these challenges. By integrating theoretical insights on misinformation and media influence, the research offers practical recommendations to enhance information integrity and cultivate a more informed public.
