From Experimenters to Innovators: The Evolution of Employee Value Priorities in India's BPO Sector (2007–2025)

Abstract This paper revisits the findings on employee value priorities within the Indian Business Process Outsourcing (CALL CENTER) industry, initially explored through a comprehensive social forecasting PhD thesis conducted in 2007. This updated analysis seeks to answer the question: if the original research were to be repeated now, in 2025, how would it be conducted, and what significant differences would emerge in findings and implications? The Indian CALL CENTER sector, a significant global player, has consistently faced human resource challenges, including high attrition and concerns about job satisfaction and employee well-being. Employing a social forecasting methodology, the original research sought to understand these issues by examining the interplay of values, individualization of work, and role scope. A key contribution of the earlier study was the identification of a unique employee typology, termed "Experimenters." These individuals displayed a complex blend of traditional values (fidelity, conformity) combined with a distinct readiness for new experiences, often driven by instrumental rewards and aspirations for global exposure. However, this was coupled with a perceived disequilibrium stemming from the routine nature of CALL CENTER work and blurred work-life boundaries. This paper extracts and re-evaluates these foundational 2007 insights, offering a critical lens through which to understand the evolving Indian workforce in a now maturing CALL CENTER sector. It highlights how these historical findings remain pertinent for addressing contemporary HR challenges and proposes avenues for updated research to capture shifts in employee value priorities and their long-term implications in the current technological and socio-economic landscape.
