Moving repositories out of the periphery and into the center of scholarly publishing
Publish, Review, Curate (PRC) is a model of publishing that involves review and validation / editorial commentary of an open access preprint. It introduces much greater openness and transparency across the publishing ecosystem, by making manuscripts, reviews, and commentaries openly available. As opposed to their current role (archiving an already published manuscript), repositories play a much more fundamental role in a PRC publishing ecosystem. Over the last two years, COAR has been increasingly active in promoting PRC through the Arcadia-funded COAR Notify project, firstly, by developing and introducing the COAR Notify protocol, a game changing technology that enables bi-directional linking between peer review services, overlay journals and repositories. And second, by promoting PRC in various venues and fora, such as with the emerging alliance of diamond open access infrastructures. This presentation will provide an overview of the current PRC ecosystem and present some of the most important opportunities that PRC presents for the repository community as well as the specific practices needed for individual repositories that are interested in participating in the PRC ecosystem.
