Unified Payments Interface (UPI): System Design, Fraud Mechanisms, and Solutions
The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has revolutionized digital transactions in India, providing a secure, real-time, and user-centric platform for mobile payments. However, with UPI’s widespread adoption, incidents of fraud have also surged, as malicious actors exploit both system and user vulnerabilities. This paper providesan in-depth examination of the technical architecture of UPI, with a focus on core components and transaction workflows, alongside an analysis of fraud mechanisms, particularly those involving manipulated payment notifications. Finally, we discuss advanced preventive measures, including multi-factor authentication, machinelearning-based fraud detection, and user education, to mitigate fraud in UPI transactions.
