Phra Somdej Wat Rakhang: The Than Saem Variant in the Two-Canal Context (Awarded in the Bang Khun Phrom Category)
This article presents a comparative analysis of the Phra Somdej Wat Rakhang: Than Saem Variant, a revered Buddhist votive tablet distinguished by its refined craftsmanship and iconographic elegance. The design harmoniously integrates influences from Chiang Saen, Sukhothai, and U-Thong art styles, especially evident in the layered base lines known as Nisīdana and Bua Look Kaew, which enhance its aesthetic depth. The clay composition adheres to the authentic Wat Rakhang formula, with traces of lacquer and gold leaf applied during later veneration practices. Notably, the presence of oxidized mineral accretions points to its enshrinement in the Bang Khun Phrom crypt, supporting the notion of “Two-Canal Phra” relics created in Wat Rakhang but later interred at Bang Khun Phrom. The piece received formal certification at a national amulet competition in 1982, affirming its authenticity and typological integrity. A glossary of technical terms is included to facilitate deeper understanding of its historical, artistic, and archaeological significance.
